The city of St. John's says it needs a larger financial pledge from the provincial government.

Acting mayor Shannie Duff says last week's budget didn't contain the multi-year capital works commitment to the city that was featured in previous budgets.

Duff said that means several large projects could be put on hold, including a new west-end fire station.

"We can't tackle them within the financing commitment on a one-year basis and if you start them and can't finish them you're in real bad trouble," she said.

Duff said it could also mean a delay in plans to replace the Mews and Wedgewood Park community centres.

She's calling on the province to review its decision.
