St. John's airport upgrading runways to allow 700 more flights per year
St. John's International Airport has released footage of work in progress on a major expansion project on one of the runway intersections.
As part of a major upgrade, the airport authority is installing a new runway system, which it claims will allow 700 more flights to operate on schedule in 2016, regardless of fog.
A new instrument landing system (ILS) will see new state of the art technology put to use to improve the ability of flights to get in and out of St. John's despite the weather.
The authority says only St. John's and Toronto will have ILS on both ends of its primary runway, and St. John's will be the first airport in the world to install LED light technology on the primary runway approach tower.
