Brad Gushue's rink named N.L.'s Team of the Year
Sports Newfoundland and Labrador hands out awards, Hall of Fame inductions
Brad Gushue's rink is vying for a world title later Sunday, but the team earned another honour Saturday night.
Sports Newfoundland and Labrador named Gushue's rink the Team of the Year at its annual Stars and Legends awards gala in St. John's. The foursome — skip Gushue, lead Geoff Walker, second Brett Gallant and third Mark Nichols — won the Tim Hortons Brier last month and is representing Canada and the world men's curling championship in Edmonton.

Nine awards were handed out at the gala, co-hosted by former Here & Now anchor Jonathan Crowe at the Sheraton Hotel, and three people were inducted into the provincial Sports Hall of Fame.
The other winners were :
- Senior Female Athlete of the Year: Heather Healey (baseball)
- Senior Male Athlete of the Year: Sean Cleary (softball)
- Junior Female Athlete of the year: Camryn Bonia (athletics)
- Junior Male Athlete of the Year: Liam Hickey (wheelchair basketball/sledge hockey)
- Executive of the Year Award: John Cowan (rugby)
- Volunteer of the Year: Shane Dunphy (soccer)
- Coach of the Year: Noel Strapp (wrestling)
- Official of the Year: Ryan Garland (baseball)
The inductees into the provincial Sports Hall of Fame were Gerald Lomond of gymnastics in the Builder category, St. John's IceCaps CEO Glenn Stanford in the Athlete/Builder category, and former rugby star Rod Snow in the Athlete category.
