Seniors at Mountain View Retirement Centre in Corner Brook spent the last few weeks secretly making "ugly Christmas sweaters" for the big reveal at their first ugly Christmas sweater party Thursday.

Residents like Arthur Marsden had no idea what an ugly Christmas sweater was all about, but said this party was good for the spirit and long overdue.

"After seeing what's going on here today we're a long ways out, we should have been doing this before, it's perfect," said Marsden.

"We're making the ones that can't dance, can't get up to see — and that's almost as good as [them] dancing."

Unique designs

Designs included everything from Christmas lights, decorations and candy.

And for Lillian Dalley, there were even pet toys included in the sweater design.

Dalley said she added the pet toys to her sweater for her grandson, who has two Labrador retrievers, but most important were two Christmas ornaments that her son gave to her around five years ago.

"Those there are really dear to my heart," said Dalley, adding that the ornaments are hung on her Christmas tree every year.

Meanwhile, Marsden said this trend turned out to be a lot of good fun for everyone.

"I think now, when I'm looking around, that we're all looking like kings."
