The collision occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway near St. George's.

"It was a hard impact on the moose. It was pushed up the road a ways, and the guts had spilled out. It was a violent impact," said Const. Burns Anderson.

When the police arrived on the scene, Anderson said, they found a woman, 26, distraught on the highway.

The woman, who had been in the passenger seat, was treated at hospital and released.

"Unfortunately, the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time," Anderson told CBC News.

Anderson added that road conditions at the time were good. The RCMP is still investigating whether other factors may have played a role in the collision.
