Liberal MP O'Regan enters 'wellness program' for 'alcohol-free lifestyle,' tweets say

"I've decided after consultation with family that I can be most effective as a Member of Parliament by adopting an alcohol-free lifestyle," he wrote in a series of four tweets.

O'Regan said he entered the program over the holiday break, but will return to his parliamentary duties before the end of the month.

O'Regan ousted NDP incumbent Ryan Cleary in the St. John's South-Mount Pearl riding back in October, in a sweep that put the Liberals in government.

Touted throughout the campaign as a star candidate for the Liberals, O'Regan is a close friend of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who tweeted his support for the MP on Sunday evening.

Before making the move to politics, he co-hosted CTV's Canada AM for nearly a decade.
