Police confirm they are investigating a case of animal cruelty involving a student with "a hatchet" and a seagull at Mount Pearl Senior High.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said it was called on May 16 about an incident that occurred the previous day.

It's alleged a seagull was injured by a student who was said to have a hatchet.

The bird was taken to a local veterinarian where it had to be euthanized.

Police said, as of Wednesday morning, no charges had been laid but the investigation is ongoing.
