The Liberal Leader, Dwight Ball, and reporters got to try something a little different on the campaign trail in Bonavista Bay on Saturday ... sea urchins.

"You may know them as sea urchins, ma'am," wrote Ray Guy in 1975.

Now, those thorny creatures are bringing in revenue for a fish plant in Wareham, Bonavista Bay.

Wood-Pick Enterprises gets a supply of sea urchins from onshore vessels that use scuba divers to harvest the urchins.

Then, plant workers extract the roe, which is packaged fresh and shipped to Asian markets, mostly in Japan.

Liberal leader, Dwight Ball and reporters got a tour on Saturday. The CBC's Carolyn Stokes had a taste, and said the roe is mushy — but good — especially with a touch of soy sauce.

Check out the video above for a look at the processing.
