When Ryan Janes makes his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut later this month, his mother won't be watching.

"My mom won't watch it until afterwards, just to make sure I won and I didn't get hurt," Janes, 34, told Here and Now on Friday.

Janes — who was born in Grand Falls-Windsor and grew up in the St. John's area — didn't take up mixed-martial arts until he was 25.

Now he trains in British Columbia and takes his 8-1 record into UFC for the first time Aug. 27 against a fellow Atlantic Canadian: Adam Hunter of New Brunswick.
