Rooming house gutted in Happy Valley-Goose Bay fire

Everyone who lived inside a rooming house in Happy Valley-Goose Bay that caught fire Friday morning has been accounted for.

The fire started around 7 a.m. at a two-storey house on MacDonald Drive.

Firefighters have the fire under control but they do not expect to have the blaze completely smothered until this afternoon.

According to emergency responders, 11 adults were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Neighbour Mike Kearney said the fire can still be smelled in the area.

"The smell is very noticeable. I'm about four houses down from the event and you can smell plastic, rubbery sort of burning smell," said Kearney.

"I just hope everyone was OK."

The frame of the building is still standing, but it has been gutted by fire and smoke.

Meanwhile, some people are wondering where the now-displaced people will live, considering the shortage of housing available in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Last year, a 40-room boarding house closed its doors.

There is no immediate word on what caused the fire.
