One person was killed and five were injured in a two-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway Monday

First responders were at the scene of a fatal two-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway west of St. John's Monday.

RCMP were called to the scene just west of Veterans Memorial Highway before 11 a.m. and reported that one person was dead, and five others were injured.

A severely damaged vehicle lay on its side in a ditch on the side of the road, while a pickup truck had most of its front end destroyed. The truck was towing a boat, which landed across one of the lanes of highway.

Police have set up pylons around the accident scene, and officers said there will be slowdowns in traffic while the investigation continues.

Observers on the scene told CBC News it appears the crash happened when a truck heading east crossed the median.

There is no word on how badly the five people are hurt.
