Relative believes Newman acquittal will be overturned

The man who found Chrissy Predham Newman's body said he still believes police handled the murder case properly, and that they had the right man when they arrested Ray Newman.

Newman, 35, was acquitted of second-degree murder last week. A judge excluded key evidence, saying the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary violated Newman's charter rights.

The victim's uncle, Bruce Harvey, and his wife found the 28-year-old's bloodied body in her basement apartment in Airport Heights on Jan. 21, 2007.

Harvey recalled the scene almost six years ago.

"She was slaughtered. She was slaughtered," he said.

"In my mind, it was a crime of passion. She was stabbed so many times, with her throat slit. Left to die in an apartment by herself with nobody by her side. It's horrendous."

In an interrogation video that CBC News aired on Wednesday, Newman says he and Chrissy were going to reconcile their relationship.

"We were talking about getting back together. She told me that she loved me, and all this, and I told her I loved her. That was it," Newman says in the police video.

Harvey said Newman was lying.

"Only for the seriousness of this, that's laughable. That's laughable. Chrissy was not getting back with Ray Newman," he said.

"She was an intelligent girl. She was not going back with Ray Newman. As a matter of fact, she was in the process of looking at house plans and things in Ottawa to move back to Ottawa."

While Harvey is upset that Newman was acquitted, he's not contemptuous of the justice system. Harvey admits he doesn't have a full understanding of charter rights, but he doesn't think the RNC went too far.

"Judges are not infallible. I think the interpretation was wrong of what happened, and I'm cautiously optimistic that if this goes to Appeals Court and [it's] heard by three judges, we'll get it overturned and this case will proceed," he said.

Harvey said he believes Ray Newman is getting away with murder.

"As easy as an innocent man can be found guilty, a guilty man can be found innocent," he said.
