Princess Anne made time Thursday morning on her royal visit to the province to take part in a sod-turning ceremony for the new Rainbow Riders facility in Pippy Park, in St. John's.

The therapeutic riding program, which pairs children with disabilities with an equine partner, is in the midst of a massive fundraising campaign to improve its infrastructure, which is aging and under heavy demand.

Princess Anne is a dedicated equestrian herself, having won several eventing medals. She also competed at the 1976 Olympics, and is the mother of Olympic eventing silver medallist Zara Phillips.

As part of her tour, The Princess Royal will also take part in Memorial Day ceremonies and Beaumont-Hamel commemorations on July 1.
