'Power watch' to end Saturday morning: No problem meeting demand, says Hydro
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro says repairs are underway to the Holyrood generating station, and a "power watch" implemented Jan. 6 will end on Saturday.
Hydro asked customers to conserve power because of cold temperatures and a high demand. It said Friday that the power watch will continue overnight but be lifted in the morning.
"The electricity usage on the island for the coming week looks good and generation reserves on the system for the upcoming week remain positive," said Hydro in a statement Friday afternoon.
"There are no alerts expected at this time."
The statement said that the generating unit which was taken offline at Holyrood on Jan. 6 is being repaired and is expected to be back in operation by next weekend.
"We continue to monitor the system closely and all other generation and transmission assets are available and ready to provide reliable service to customers. All back-up generation on the Avalon is also available and on standby," said Hydro.
The Crown corporation promised to do a better job of alerting customers to possible power interruptions after a review of what happened during the 2014 outages known as DarkNL.
