Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is notifying customers on the Avalon that there is a short-term power watch in effect for the next 24 to 48 hours as cold temperatures are expected to move into the island.

The utility said it's predicting increased demands on its system during high peak hours, particularly on Monday between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

In a statement released Sunday, NL Hydro said two units at the Holyrood generating station are working at a reduced capacity.

"No immediate action is required for customers, however the electricity system is being monitored closely and Hydro will advise if anything changes," the release said.

While no conservation request has been issued, the utility is asking customers to prepare to conserve in the event that things change.

Hydro said customers can follow updates on its Twitter and Facebook pages for more information.
