Elections Canada has released a revised results count in the riding of Labrador that reduces the Tory margin of victory in  the former Liberal stronghold.

Validated results published on Elections Canada's website shows that Conservative Peter Penashue defeated Liberal incumbent Todd Russell by 79 votes.

Preliminary results on Monday night had Penashue winning the race by 231 votes.

Penashue, a veteran Innu leader and activist, became the first Tory to win in Labrador since 1968, and only the second since Confederation.

Elections Canada said 10,744 people voted in the riding, although 52 of those ballots were rejected.
