Pedestrian, 17, dead after being hit by car in St. John's
A young man is dead after being knocked down by a vehicle near an elementary school crosswalk in the west end of St. John's on Monday.
The 17-year-old was hit on Topsail Road around 4:30 p.m. Monday. Police initially said he was 18.
Bishops College, where the young man was a student, said in a release sent to parents, it had received word of the teenager's death Tuesday afternoon.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said he was walking across Topsail Road towards Forbes Street when he was hit by a vehicle turning left from Hazelwood Elementary School.
Bishops College said there will be counsellors and psychologists at the school Wednesday to offer support.
He was previously reported to be in serious but stable condition.
RNC Cst. Steve Curnew said the matter is still under investigation, and can't say whether charges will be laid or not.
The vehicle involved was seized to undergo a mechanical inspection, which Curnew said is standard in this type of investigation.
