Some drivers who visit the downtown area of St. John's will get a short reprieve from paying for parking next week while upgrades are made on parking meters.

The City of St. John's said Mackay Meters will perform hardware upgrades on the meters during a four-day period that starts Saturday.

During that time, yellow bags will be placed on the meters to protect them from winter weather.

"Parking will be free in marked, bagged spaces during the upgrade; if the meter you are occupying is upgraded and returned while you are in the space, you will not be ticketed," the city said in a statement.

Upgrades are expected to be finished by Tuesday.

As usual, parking is free during the weekend.

City Hall said updates will be provided on social media, including its Twitter account, as to what areas will undergo meter maintenance.
