Parents vow to fight St. John's school closures

The Eastern School District has some new recommendations following an independent engineering report on restructuring schools in the St. John's area.

The Eastern School District has new recommendations that follow an independent engineering report on restructuring schools in the St. John's area.

At a meeting Wednesday night, board members voted to support renovating Holy Heart of Mary High School and closing three schools for lower grades:  I.J. Samson Junior High, Macpherson Elementary and Holy Cross Junior High School.

Some school council members don’t support closing those buildings.

"We aren't giving up and we will fight and be vocal in this until the final vote is made on the 9th.," said Gerry Sullivan, a member of the school council at Holy Cross Junior High School.  "We'll be making every plea."

Board members also want new schools built in the Torbay area and Portugal Cove-St. Phillips.

The district will hold three public consultation sessions held before a final vote in March 9.
