Meet Oreo, the tuxedo cat who prowls the stacks of Old Perlican's public library
Oreo lives full-time at the Old Perlican Public Library in rural Newfoundland
A small library in the rural Newfoundland community of Old Perlican has a special employee that sets it apart from the rest: a tuxedo cat named Oreo, who has made the library her full-time home.
By day, Oreo brings smiles to the faces of Old Perlican Public Library patrons like Isaac Doyle, 6, who comes specifically to pay her visits.
By night, she oversees the premises and sleeps on a soft floor mat or in her sweater-lined box. "She might read cat books," Isaac suspects.
"She just brings happiness when they walk through the doors," said librarian Cathy Hatch.
Originally brought in by a library employee, the three-year-old cat's title is "Town Mouser." Hatch said Oreo's job description includes making people smile, giving love, catching rodents, and sometimes chasing kids.
"We all take care of her together," Hatch said. The town supplies Oreo's food, the library staff feed her, and library visitors bring her treats, toys, and paper bags to play in — her favourite pastime.
"People should come here to see the cat," Doyle said.
