CBC assignment producer Mike Rossiter set his alarm for 3 a.m. Friday to capture these pictures of the rare lunar eclipse. He swung by a busy Signal Hill in St. John’s to take in the ‘blood moon’ before stopping at the National War Memorial.

In the early morning hours on Friday, a bloom worm moon hung over St. John's.

It's a total eclipse of the moon by the Earth at the same time as it goes through a full moon phase for March.

The CBC's Mike Rossiter set his alarm and braved the frigid darkness to catch a glimpse.
