New skateboard shop opens in Grand Falls-Windsor

Two friends from Grand Falls-Windsor decided to open up a new skateboard shop in the town to fill the demand for gear after the town opened up its skatepark.

Brandon Young and Marshall Borland said it had always been a dream of theirs to open up a store, but they never expected to actually do it.

"I was actually thinking about it for a while, and one day me and Brandon and another friend were on the way to the Gander skateboard park and I just happened to mention the idea to them and we just kind of decided we were going to do it, and now we're here," Borland said.

Young said opening up Valley Boards has been an adventure.

"It's been a journey, for sure. It's been a dream for both of our lives — our whole lives — and now it's finally happening," Young said.

According to Young, skateboarders in the area had to get their equipment either by travelling out of town or shopping online.

He said the store also sells apparel, as well as shoes — something he said the town sorely needed.

Young said he's hoping to introduce people in the town to a new sport.

"We're hoping we're going to change a lot of things around here. I know that growing up it wasn't really focused on — it's been mainly hockey and other sports around here — but it is growing," Young said

"The town's growing more every day so hopefully we'll see a big change."
