Memorial University students gearing up for the fall semester toured the school's newest residence Tuesday and gave it good reviews.

Two hundred and fifty students will move into the west wing of the recently-constructed residence next month. Work is still being done on the east wing, so the other 250 scheduled to move in will have to wait until January 2014.

First-year MUN student Emily Mercer is pleased with her new digs, and gives the residence an 8/10 rating. (CBC)

First-year student Emily Mercer is hoping the apartment-like setting will help her to later transition into real-world life.

"Well, we each have one roommate, and we have our own bedroom ... but we share a shower and a bathroom with just our own roomate, which is nice — and we have a little porch," said Mercer.

"I like the fact that we have our own rooms, because we have our own privacy, and it's kind of like an apartment ... but it's baby steps to being on your own."

Student Matthew Sheppard likes the privacy afforded in the new residence.

"I only share a washroom with one person as opposed to 150. And you know, I don't sleep with anyone looking across from me — so that's definitely a bonus," Sheppard said.

"There's just a lot of space for storage ... so for anyone like myself who's a pack-rat, then it's perfect."

Each floor has a common area for students to study and to prepare meals.

The residence is yet to be officially named.
