New Eastern Health service making it easier to access addictions counselling
Eastern Health is promoting a new service aimed at those struggling with addictions.
The health authority has launched a phone line called Adult Central Intake.
It can be accessed by dialing 752-8888.
Assessments are done on the phone and appointments scheduled.
The service can also connect users with a number of mental health supports in the community.
Beneficial for those without a doctor
The service is in response to what health officials believe is a rise in the abuse of prescription painkillers like OxyContin and morphine, and the consumption of alcohol and drugs like cocaine.
"Unfortunately, there certainly is a rise and we're seeing that," said Vanessa McEntegart, an addictions counsellor with Eastern Health.
The health authority is trying to make it easier for people with any addiction to get help; especially those without a doctor.
"Some people don't have access to a GP, but you can self-refer and I don't think people realize that," McEntegart explained.
McEntegart said it takes a lot of courage for those struggling with addictions to reach out for help, but she encourages them to do so.
She said the direct line is an efficient service and can connect people with help.
For people in immediate crisis, Eastern Health said it's best to use the 24-hour Mental Health Crisis Line at 1-888-737-4668.
