A six-year-old cancer patient who has raised $40,000 to help others was called "a hero" by the speaker of the House of Assembly Thursday and given a standing ovation by MHAs.

Nevaeh Denine and her family were invited onto the floor of the legislature and presented with a Newfoundland and Labrador flag signed by all MHAs.

The little girl who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of three was in remission, but found out in February that her neuroblastoma had returned.

"This six-year-old has been battling cancer with amazing courage and strength," said Tom Osborne, the Speaker of the House of Assembly.

"She's also been an inspiration for all of us."

Inspired by the Janeway Telethon, Denine began to raise money through a lemonade stand in July 2014, and has planned another one for July 24 of this year.

Last year, Osborne said, Denine raised $40,000.

"So while Nevaeh is battling cancer herself, she is raising a tremendous amount of money for others. She is a hero."
