Newfoundland and Labrador's school districts are holding recruitment fairs this week, but the head of the union representing teachers says the province is going to lose some of its young recruits.

Lily Cole, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association, said she figures some some new teachers will end up leaving because of cuts announced in the most recent provincial budget.

"Unfortunately some of these very bright young vibrant teachers will leave our province," said Cole. "Because we have 160 fewer positions, and I think it's a very sad day for education in our province."

However, Cole said if she was a young teacher, she would still attend the recruitment fair because some teaching positions or short-term opportunities may still be available, and to find out more about different areas of the province where she could teach.

The first teacher recruitment fair has been slated for Monday afternoon at Memorial University's Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook.

The second teacher recruitment fair has been scheduled for  Wednesday in St. John's.
