MV Veteran tied up with mechanical problem
Air services will be arranged if the vessel remains out of service Tuesday
A familiar story has re-emerged in Fogo Island and Change Islands, as the new ferry, the MV Veteran, is tied up with a mechanical issue.
The Department of Transportation and Works confirms that the ferry, which services Fogo Island and Change Islands, is tied up Monday in Farewell.
Crews are investigating a mechanical issue that arose Monday morning, a department spokesperson said.
It will be out of service for the remainder of Monday due to an "engineering problem with the starboard propulsion unit."
The $50-million vessel first ran into trouble on its maiden voyage from the Damen Shipyard in Romania, after its engine failed.
Then, in late December, the ferry was out knocked of commission for a day because of an issue with its thruster.
Two weeks ago, residents had to be flown by helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft back and forth from the island after fire knocked the vessel out of service yet again.
The department is urging travellers to check in with its website for updates on the status of the vessel.
If the vessel remains out of service on Tuesday, air services will be arranged, the department said.
