Earlier this week, actor Meg Ryan appeared on American late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live and she got to talking about a trip she made to Dildo, N.L., almost 20 years ago.

The Trinity Bay outport with the eyebrow-raising name has been a favourite topic for Kimmel for several years. In 2019, he was named the honorary mayor of Dildo, featuring the town on his show and sending down staffer and comedian Guillermo Rodriguez. As a local service district committee, Dildo does not have an actual mayor.

Ryan was on the show with David Duchovny on Wednesday night to promote their new romantic comedy, What Happens Later, and Kimmel asked her about a photo she took.

The black and white photograph was of the late Carrie Fisher, her daughter Billie Lourd and stepson Harper Simon posing in front of a Dildo sign.

"You're not in this photograph, but it's meaningful to me. Look at that. Because you're in the town of Dildo, which is in Newfoundland," Kimmel said during the program.

Ryan explained Fisher, who died in 2016, wrote a travel article for the New York Times in 2005 about a trip to Newfoundland. Ryan tagged along as a photographer.

"We shopped a lot. We got merch. I got, like, a T-shirt with a big happy face and then the name of the town underneath," recalled Ryan.

During the interview, Kimmel mentioned he was Dildo's honorary mayor but that he hadn't visited yet, explaining, "I heard it takes three flights to get there and that's just … too many flights."

Ryan also had fun with N.L. names, saying Dildo is near Conception Harbour and across from Spread Eagle.

Kimmel noted he and his team had donated a Hollywood-style sign for the town and people had travelled there to be photographed in front of it.
