Marine Atlantic has cancelled crossings between Port aux Basques and North Sydney today.

Much of the island portion of the province is experiencing the first snowfall of the season.

On the southwest coast, rain and flurries combining with winds gusting to 70 have made for rough conditions.

Both the Highlanders and the Ala'suinu have been tied up for the duration of the day, with all crossings through 11:30 pm this evening cancelled.

Reserved passengers are asked to call Marine Atlantic to reschedule.

Marine Atlantic's Corporate Communications Officer Darrell Mercer says captains are currently monitoring potential weather impacts for Sunday morning, as there is still some uncertainty of when the wind will drop.

An update on Sunday's crossings is expected late Saturday.
