Marble Mountain is up for sale again as N.L. searches for buyers

The Newfoundland and Labrador government hopes potential buyers will invest in the Marble Mountain, on Newfoundland's west coast, and maintain it as an economic boon to the Corner Brook area. The ski resort has been up for sale before, though with no successful applicants.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government has issued a request for expressions of interest for the purchase or long-term lease of Marble Mountain ski resort, on Newfoundland's west coast.

The document says, "The province is seeking to hear from potential proponents that may be interested in presenting a sustainable business model and who are willing to undertake investment in the resort including maintaining/improving ski assets in order to maintain benefits to the western region of Newfoundland and Labrador."

It goes on to say, "It is the desire of the province to position the resort for long-term success through private investment."

Interested buyers have until Sept. 13 to submit their expressions of interest.

In June 2018, the provincial government issued a request for proposals in its efforts to privatize the resort. But three years later it cancelled the RFP, saying it received only three submissions and aspects of the proposals had changed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the winter, Marble Mountain employs close to 150 people, and even during the slow season, there are dozens of workers. As well, the ski hill boosts the business of other hotels, restaurants and gas stations in the Corner Brook area when Marble is open.
