Manslaughter charge for St. John's teen

A16-year-old, charged with arson after a man was found dead in a house was destroyed by fire on Springdale Street in St. John's Sunday, is also facing a manslaughter charge as the investigation into what happened continues.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said firefighters were called to 101 Springdale Street around 4 a.m.

A 54-year-old man was found dead in the downtown St. John's boarding house early Sunday morning.

The accused teenager is also facing three charges of arson -property damage, three charges of arson - disregard for human life, and seven charges of breaches of court order.

Apart from the victim, there were four other people in the house at the time of the fire.

Three of the people were sent to hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The residential home suffered extensive damage, and the Canadian Red Cross and the Salvation Army are providing assistance to those displaced by the fire.
