RCMP in Happy Valley-Goose Bay have charged a 23-year old man with assault, following an incident at the Muskrat Falls construction site on Sunday.

Nalcor announced Thursday that the man, who allegedly kicked an Innu co-worker in the head while wearing steel-toe boots, has been fired by the outside contractor he worked for.

According to Innu Nation Grand Chief Anastasia Qupee, the man had also been reprimanded for making racist remarks against the same Innu co-worker a week prior.

Fifteen to 20 protesters blocked road access to the North Spur work site on Friday, in a silent show of support for Innu workers.

Police said the man was arrested on Friday and charged with assault. He was later released to appear in Happy Valley-Goose Bay provincial court on Oct. 14.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
