The summer season might be short in Newfoundland and Labrador, but that doesn't stop organizers across the province from putting together dozens of great festivals and events.

Maybe you are planning on loading up the car and checking out some different areas of the province, or perhaps you are just looking for something to do one afternoon in your hometown. Either way, here's a list of some of the bigger things happening over the next couple months in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Events starting in July

Exploits Valley Salmon Festival

Annual outdoor music festival featuring performers such as John Fogerty, Tom Cochrane and Collective Soul.

Trinity Theatre

Summer theatre performances featuring the famous pagent, dinner theatre and more.

Shakespeare by the Sea Festival

St. John's, various locations.

July 3 - August 17

The longest running outdoor summer theatre event in the St. John's area. Performing the works of Shakespeare at different locations around the city.

Grand Bank Theatre Festival 

Grand Bank

July 11 - August 29

Various performances take place at the the Grand Bank Theatre building.

Stephenville Theatre Festival

Stephenville

July 17- August 17

The longest-running professional theatre festival in the province. Includes popular musical theatre and a variety of other shows.

Perhance Theatre Festival

July 18 - August 30

Various performance, including works by Shakespeare at the Perchance Theatre building.

Fish Fun & Folk Festival

Twillingate

July 20 - 26

One of the largest and longest running folk festivals in the province, featuring music, fireworks, a bonfire and more.

Burin Heritage Weekend

Burin

July 20 - August 2

A four-day community event featuring live music, food, a huge fireworks show, sporting events, dancing and all other things celebrating Burin's heritage.

Klondyke Days

Bay Roberts

July 22 - August 3

Parade, community breakfast garden parties, musical concerts, outside shopping, family fun day, guided walking tours and large fireworks display.

Sand and Sea Festival

Burgeo

July 23 - 26

Live music, dances, community dinners, games and other activities and events.

Alexander Bay Days Festival

Glovertown

July 23 - 26

Celebrates the community of Glovertown with music, games and entertainment. The festival includes local musical acts, games and concessions throughout the weekend.

Codroy Valley Folk Festival

Upper Ferry

July 24 - 26

One of the longest running festivals on the island. Featuring traditional and folk music. The festival has been taking place since 1982.

North West River Beach Festival

North West River, Labrador

July 25 - 26

Labrador's biggest summer festival features two full days of live music and entertainment.

George Street Festival

Downtown St. John's

July 30 - August 4

Live music including Trooper, City and Colour, Classified, Gin Blossoms, and more.

Gander's Festival of Flight 

Gander

July 31 - August 3

Festival celebrates Gander's aviation history. Music, Newfoundland's biggest kitchen party and the province's biggest demolition derby.

Cape St. George & Mainland Folk Festival/Regional Bilingual Folk Festival

Mainland/La Grand-Terre

August 1 - 2

Bilingual folk festival of the Port au Port Peninsula with traditional music, dance, kids games and crafts. Festival régional bilingue avec de la musique et la danse traditionnelles.

Royal St. John's Regatta

Quidi Vidi Lake, St. John's

August 5

The oldest continuing sports event in North America. Traditional fixed seat rowing races, games of chance, draws, food and more!

Blueberry Festival

Brigus

August 6 - 9

See the three-foot blueberry pie, the Miss Blueberry Pageant, take in the folk festival, outdoor dance, 'Newfie' night, pie-eating contest, traditional food, moose burgers and a beer tent.

Community festival celebrating Newfoundland culture and heritage with a significant schedule of activities and events for people of all ages.

Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival

Bannerman Park, St. John's

Aug. 8 - 10

Features performers from Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond including Hey Rosetta, Bruce Cockburn, The Fables, David Francey, Fred Penner and more.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk festival was temporarily relocated to Bowring Park in 2014 to allow for renovations at Bannerman Park near downtown St. John's. The festival returns to Bannerman in 2015. (CBC)

Eastbound Hoedown Summer Festival

Avondale

Festival at new Avalon Speedway featuring Lynyrd Skynrd, Lonestar, Rex Goudie, and other performers.

The Gathering

Burlington, N.L.

August 27 - 29

Welcom 'Ome is the motto for this year's The Gathering, as Shaun Majumder and friends present fire, food and music at the annual event in Burlington. Local artists, a weekend full of music, and some of the province's top chefs will all be in town.

Avalon Expo

RE/MAX Centre, St. John's

August 29 - 30

Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Gaming/Comics/Pop-culture expo with many local vendors and artists, costumes, educational panels and workshops, tabletop gaming, special guests from TV and comics, and much more. All things geek.
