How to prevent thefts from your vehicle

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says there are steps you can take to deter thieves from breaking into and taking things from your car.

Here's The Lowdown from Const. James Cadigan on how to prevent thefts from your vehicle.

Cadigan said when parking your car, whether it's in your driveway or in a parking lot, it's best to look for a well-lit and well-travelled area.

"Ensure the outside of your home is [also] well lit. Offenders prefer to work in the shadows," he said.

"You want to make sure your windows are up, your doors are locked, and your keys are in a secure location."

Keep valuables out of sight

Cadigan said criminals won't hesitate about entering or breaking into your vehicle if they see something they want, or something that they think may be of value.

"Offenders take an opportunity when they see one," he said.

"Ensure you keep valuables out of plain sight within your vehicle. Keep valuables in a safe place, such as your trunk, or remove them from your vehicle."

The RNC suggests you record all serial numbers of your property, including ID cards, and keep that information with you, or in a safe place.

Cadigan said as the weather warms up, there will be more people walking around neighbourhoods, and it's important to be vigilant.

"If you see someone that seems out of place, or an unusual vehicle in your neighborhood, or any suspicious activity — contact the RNC and we will follow up," he said.
