Less Violence, More Violins, a benefit concert for the Refugee Immigrant Advisory Council

The head of the Refugee Immigrant Advisory Council says his group has received a lot of public support following a "stunning" fundraiser at Cochrane Street United Church in St. John's over the weekend.

"We received a lot of encouragement from people who didn't make it but wanted to buy a ticket [to show support]," said RIAC executive director Jose Rivera.

Rivera said ticket sales for Less Violence, More Violins brought in $2,600, with 104 tickets sold.

Rivera said there are plans to host a similar event next year.

A local financial group, he said, has already come on board to match future funds raised.

This week, RIAC plans to post an awareness package outlining the details involved in refugee sponsorship.

Rivera said the group has received a number of calls requesting information regarding the timelines and the costs associated with sponsoring a refugee.

The details, he said, will soon be posted on RIAC's website and Facebook page
