Labrador boy drowns in pond
Police in northern Labrador say a nine-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a pond used as a water supply in Nain.
Police in northern Labrador said Saturday a nine-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a pond used as a community water supply.
RCMP said the boy was swimming in a small pond in Nain with another boy Friday afternoon.
Const. Brian Tellenbach said the boy swam too far from shore and drowned.
Tellenbach said the pond was about 12 feet — 3.5 metres — deep where the boy was found.
RCMP were called to the scene around 5:30 p.m. Friday.
In a statement, Tellenbach said a local man "brought [him] to shore where attempts to revive him at the scene and clinic were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the local clinic."
The pond, which supplies fresh water to the town, is designated as a no-swimming area.
