Kidnapping suspect remanded for psychiatric evaluation
A Newfoundland man charged with kidnapping a woman in St. John's last week will remain in custody thisweek while he is being assessed by a psychiatrist.
Darren Joseph Fagan, 36, of Riverhead,St. Mary's Bay,appeared in provincial court Monday.
Fagan, whowas charged Friday,also faces one count of unlawful possession of a weapon and two counts of sexual assault with a weapon.
RCMP investigators say the woman was parked near an Irving gas station in the St. John's neighbourhood of Kilbride last Wednesday evening when a man entered her vehicle and ordered her to drive.
The man was using a weapon, although police have refused to specify what type of weapon it was.
The woman was kept in her car overnight and was sexually assaulted twice. She managed to escape the next morning and find help.
Fagan is expected to return to provincial court on Friday afternoon.
