Kaetlyn Osmond, Team Canada earn Olympic silver medal

Marystown native Kaetlyn Osmond took the Olympic ice again on Sunday to compete in the ladies' free skate portion of the team figure skating event.

Osmond, 18, scored 110.73 in the long program.

She began the skate strong, but experienced a fall in the middle of her skate.

Osmond placed fifth in her inaugural Olympic skate on Saturday, qualifying her for the second round of the team competition for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Team Canada sits in second place with 56 points, behind the Russian team with 67 points and ahead of the United States with 50.

Osmond scored a 62.54 with her Olympic debut skate.

Claudia Lambe, Osmond's grandmother, was in the crowd at St. Gabriel's Hall in Marystown to watch Osmond compete on Saturday.

Lambe said watching her granddaughter skate can be a little stressful.

"I don't actually breathe when she's skating," she said.

Members of Osmond's first skating club were also on edge.

Katie Stoodley said the calibre of Olympic competitions is difficult to beat.

"I think for us watching, I think we should expect top ten and that would be phenomenal," Stoodley said.

Osmond will fly to Germany after the team event wraps up, to train until her individual skating competition begins on Feb. 19 and 20.
