Jones illness postpones Grit convention

Newfoundland and Labrador's Liberal Party is postponing its fall convention, to give party leader Yvonne Jones more time to recover from breast cancer treatment.

Newfoundland and Labrador's Liberal Party is postponing its fall convention to give party leader Yvonne Jones more time to recover from breast cancer treatment.

Jones, 42, was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer.

She had surgery in August and is expected to receive further treatment this fall.

Liberal Party president Judy Morrow said the convention has been delayed until next spring to allow Jones to focus on her recovery.

The Liberals had planned to hold their annual general meeting and officially acclaim Jones as party leader in mid-November.

The convention will set the party's policies leading into the October 2011 provincial election.
