Job cuts coming at Corner Brook mill: report

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper is set to cut 90 jobs, according to a report in the Western Star.

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper is set to cut 90 jobs, according to a report in the Western Star.

The newspaper, citing unnamed sources, reported Saturday that the cuts would affect both management and unionized employees in the mill, and with the company's woodlands operations.

Finance Minister Tom Marshall, whose district of Humber East includes the paper mill, confirmed the cuts are coming.

"I was given a heads-up that the company officials would be meeting with their employees and that job losses would be involved," Marshall told the Star.

The minister said he learned of the cuts on Friday, but could not confirm the exact number of jobs affected.

Contacted by CBC News, Marshall declined further comment until after the company makes an announcement. The Western Star says that will happen Tuesday.

The Corner Brook mill is the only paper-maker still operating on the island.
