Iron Ore Company expanding, will create more jobs
The Iron Ore Company of Canada will expand its production in LabradorCity next year, creatingnew jobs in the area.
The $60-million expansion will cause a jump in production from 17 million tonnes of concentrate a year to about 18.4 million next year.
Iron Ore has not said how many jobs will be created.
"Another couple of shovels are going to be purchased and some more haulage trucks and more equipment," said local union president George Kean."You know you're going to need operators for that and shovel operators. It's going to entail more workers right on through the system."
The company has already increased its workforce in Labrador by 100 people over the past few years.
The company said it hopes to complete the expansion in about a year. Work will begin immediately.
