IOC facing charges following 2010 death

The Iron Ore Company of Canada is facing five charges of violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act after a death at its Labrador City site in March 2010.

Eldon Perry, 56, died March 19 from injuries he sustained at the mine site the day before. Another worker was seriously injured in the incident.

The five charges relate to the company’s alleged failure to ensure that adequate fall protection was in place, according to a provincial government news released Thursday.

It’s also alleged that the company failed to ensure that lockout procedures were in effect; or that equipment was capable of safely performing the functions for which it was intended, and that workers and especially supervisors were made familiar with the hazards likely to be met.

The company is scheduled to appear in provincial court in Wabush, Labrador, Thursday.
