Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is connecting its new generator to the island's electrical system this weekend and says there could be temporary power outages as a result.

The company said however, if there are power failures they expect them to be short-lived.

Hydro said there have been several successful firings or start-ups of the plant, as the combustion turbine undergoes testing while crews prepare to bring it online.

They say the new generator will be brought on incrementally over the next ten days.

Once online it will be used to support the system if there is an outage, or if extra power is needed for customers beyond current capabilities.

The large generator was purchased after last year's massive blackouts which left much of Newfoundland in the dark during some of the coldest days of winter.
