Fugitive hiding in woods in western Newfoundland, Mounties say

RCMP officers were searching in western Newfoundland on Tuesday for a fugitive, after a number of cabins were raided for food and supplies.

Several cabins in the Bay St. George area have been raided, and police said they believe the thefts are linked to their three-week search for a wanted man.

Const. Steve Ettinger said police will not identify the man but are confident he can function well with stolen food and supplies.

"He's known to that area," Ettinger told CBC News.

"He's known to live up into the woods, and he can survive quite readily on his own in the wooded area, without any difficulty."

Police said they believe a woman is with him. Ettinger said the couple are not believed to be dangerous.

"They're not persons that are going to confront anyone and be violent, that we're aware of," he said.

"So it's not an advisory to be on the lookout for persons that [would] endanger someone. It's more an advisory in order to prevent any property crime and to apprehend these people."

RCMP are asking owners of cabins near Flat Bay Brook, Crabbe's River and St. David's to check their properties and to report anything that is missing.
