Dump truck recovered after sliding off Change Islands ferry
The dump truck that slid into the water last week while a ferry was unloading at Change Islands is on dry land again.
Dean Snow managed to escape unharmed through the window of his sinking vehicle and was pulled to shore by a crew member.
Snow said that as he was driving his truck off the MV Capt. Earl W. Winsor's ramp to the wharf, the boat began drifting away from the wharf and within moments, his truck was in the water, sinking between the wharf and the ferry.
While Snow is fine, his truck is in hard shape.
A crane, hired by Newfoundland and Labrador's Department of Transportation and Works, hoisted the truck out of the water on Sunday.
The MV Capt. Earl W. Winsor is back in service on the Fogo-Change Islands-Farewell route, with its stern ramp operational for off-loading heavy tractor trailers.
The aging ferry was brought into service while repairs are being made to the MV Veteran, which has been plagued by a series of problems since its engine failed shortly after it left a shipyard in Romania last August.
