Eight dragon boat teams raced on Octagon Pond on the weekend to raise money for breast cancer support and awareness

Octagon Pond in Paradise was the scene of Paradise Paddle dragon boat races on Sunday that raised money and awareness for breast cancer.

Organizer Nancy Bennett said she was pleased with the support the community has shown.

"We have eight community teams that are racing, some of them are manned by our sponsors and some are community groups that have come together. We also have the town of Paradise that has put together a team and they won the first race."

Bennett said in addition to raising funds, the weekend also provides hope for breast cancer survivors.

"It means that there can be life after breast cancer," she said. "And having the support of the community means the world to all of us."

With the success of this year's event, Bennett said the organizers are thinking of making the dragon boat races an annual event.
