A doctor has pleaded guilty to professional incompetence as a disciplinary hearing in St. John's following the death of a 9-year-old patient.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador (CPSNL) was holding the hearing involving Dr. Christo Taylor in St. John's Wednesday.

Taylor had the care of the child, Kaylie Wheaton, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in 2011 when she died.

Taylor's lawyer said the child's death "has been emotional and humbling" for Taylor, and he offers his condolences to the family.

According to a peer who reviewed the case, Taylor failed to diagnose the child properly.

A joint submission recommended that Taylor does not work in the emergency or intensive care departments until certified to do so.

CPSNL had already prevented Taylor from working in the emergency of intensive care departments without supervision, pending a decision from a disciplinary tribunal.

The tribunal said Wednesday it was "troubled," and asked for advice on the precedents in the case.

It has adjourned until Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

Taylor is still able to work in a family practice setting.

Since the 2011 incident, Taylor has completed the Licentiate Medical Council of Canada examination and has been re-certified in life support practices.

Other than the restrictions in place pending a decision, Taylor has also received full licence to practice medicine in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Now that Taylor has pleaded guilty, the tribunal will decide what sanction or punishment he will face moving forward.
