Thousands of people around Newfoundland and Labrador and across Canada walked, ran and pushed strollers on Sunday to raise money for cancer research.

Thirty-eight Terry Fox events were held throughout the province, adding to more than 900 national events.

Heather Strong, provincial director with the Terry Fox Foundation, said Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have always supported the annual fundraiser, and this year was no different.

"We take tremendous pride in Newfoundland and Labrador because Terry choose to start his run here," she said.

"So he didn't forget us 35 years ago and it's great to see that so many people are not forgetting his legacy now."

The foundation Terry Fox created has raised over $650 million for cancer research since 1980.

This is the 35th anniversary of the run, but Strong said the foundation doesn't really celebrate such anniversaries because the ultimate goal is to not have to do them.

"We at the foundation work every day to be out of a job," she said.

"We would like to cure this disease and not have to be here next year."
