Const. Douglas Snelgrove, who was charged earlier this year with sexual assault, has chosen to be tried in Supreme Court by judge and jury early next year.

Snelgrove is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in St. John's in December of last year, while he was on duty.

The 38-year-old was arrested and charged in July after an investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police.

Snelgrove, a 10 year veteran of the force, was suspended without pay after the allegation of assault.

A preliminary hearing is set for provincial court in January.

The alleged assault happened Dec. 21, 2014 when the woman was 22.

The complaint was investigated by the RNC before being passed on to the OPP in April.
