An RCMP investigation into the Don Dunphy shooting, which has been the centre of controversy since the Mitchells Brook man was killed last Easter, is expected to be completed by the end of January.

In a statement, the RCMP said the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Crime Unit is expected to complete all "investigative processes" and file a final report by the end of next month.

At that time, the report will be handed to an "outside investigative service for an independent review of the RCMP's investigation," the force said in a statement Wednesday.

Dunphy was shot and killed inside his home in Mitchells Brook, a small community in St. Mary's Bay, on Easter Sunday by a member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

The officer, who was part of former premier Paul Davis's security detail, travelled to Dunphy's home to investigate perceived threats on Twitter.

The statement also said the RCMP would not be commenting further as it is an active investigation.
